Wormholes- An Amazing Journey Through Space-Time
Wormholes/Einstein-Rosen Bridges
Hi guys!! Today, I will be writing about wormholes. Let's take this the way we always do. First, we find out what a wormhole is.
The dictionary definition-
A hypothetical connection between widely separated regions of space-time.
The scientific definition-
A wormhole is a type of tunnel that joins distant points in space, or even two different universes,
via space-time curvature.
Now that we have seen the definitions (however unhelpful), we must have got an idea (however faint) of what a wormhole is. Let's clarify once.
A wormhole is a type of hypothetical tunnel that connects two points in space. According to some physicists, a wormhole could even connect two different points in time. I am assuming you also saw the part in the scientific definition where it says a wormhole could connect two different universes. This is a concept called multiverse, which we will cover in other posts.
Now that we know what wormholes are, let's understand what significance they hold for us. If wormholes are real, that would mean faster-than-light travel!
Imagine the universe is a partially folded paper. Now, wormholes are basically what connect one side of that paper to another without covering ALL that extra distance. This is shown in the image below (I'm not sure if you can see it, because I had trouble seeing the pictures in the previous post). If you can't see the image, just take a paper fold it so that the crease doesn't appear and poke a pencil through it. Once, you have done that, remove the pencil and put a straw. This straw is the wormhole that is connecting distant points in space-time without having to cover all the distance in between. Let's proceed.
Now, according to this theory, there are two points in this wormhole- the entry and exit point. The entry point is a black hole, and the exit point is a white hole. Now, before you start cheering, there is one TINY problem. Wormholes are very unstable, and the instant they are created, they collapse in on themselves. The only way to prevent this is by using exotic matter (if you don't know what that is, just check my previous post). Even if we somehow managed to procure it, we run the danger of exposure to high radiation, and death due to other unknown factors. So yeah, travel by wormhole is something we are not YET ready for.
However, that's okay!! It is a fascinating theory, and a base for future generations, who, with the right and enough resources MAY be able to make it a reality.
Anyways, that was it for wormholes. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me in the comments below. Bye!
Signing off, this is THE BIG V.
What!!!!!
