What Is Real?
What is real?
The next great philosophical question, dear readers, is this!
WHAT IS REAL?
Even before we begin, it's obvious we can never answer this, so instead of giving you an answer, I will give you arguments for understandable reality being taken apart, and arguments against reality staying sound.
Let's begin.
Number One- Idealist Philosophy: What we consciously experience in the now, is REAL.
There is so obvious an argument against this that I find it hard to believe anyone ever even proposed it. Let's say you are in a dream. While in the dream, you believe it is real. However, when you wake up, you realise it was just a dream. When in the dream, there is no question in your mind that it is real. Only when you wake up do you realise it was just a dream. How do we know that this reality of ours is not just a dream, or something much more complex that we cannot even begin to comprehend? Therefore, sadly, it is clear that we can never find out if this world is real.
Number Two- Cojito, Ergo Sum: I think, therefore I am.
Luckily, one can know if he or she is real. The train of thought used to arrive at this conclusion is this- I doubt my existence, therefore I think. If I think, I have a consciousness of my own, therefore I am, or I exist. Simple enough to understand.
Number Three- Depends what kind of reality you are talking about.
If you are talking about what you experience through your senses, then in a sense (pun intended), reality is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain. However, this is clearly NOT the reality any of us are talking about (Right?).
We have now established two things. One, we can never know if what we experience is real. Two, we know that we are real. At least, I know I am.
John Donne once said, "No man is an island", but it seems like that is wrong after all.
On that note, I will take your leave.
SIGNING OFF, THIS IS THE BIG V,
P.S. I hope you are enjoying the series. Sorry for the depressing end to this one, the next ones will be more fun. I promise! ๐ ๐
